HELENA, Mont. (AP) — State wildlife officials say elk hunters in southwestern Montana reported killing two female grizzly bears in self-defense last weekend while three other grizzly bear deaths were reported along roadways in northwestern Montana.

A hunter near Gardiner and a group of hunters near West Yellowstone both reported shooting grizzly bears that charged them after bear spray failed to work.

The Gardiner hunter told Fish, Wildlife and Parks officials that he came upon a bear feeding on a carcass on Oct. 28. The West Yellowstone hunters said a female grizzly bear with two cubs charged them on Oct. 31.

Grizzly bear management specialist Tim Manley says a female cub was found dead on Montana Highway 35 along Flathead Lake on Oct. 27. Two bears were killed within the past week along Montana Highway 83 about 30 miles south of Bigfork.
