(HELENA) A man shot in the mountains on Wednesday afternoon has been identified as 31-year-old Casey McCormick.

The Lewis and Clark Sheriff’s Office got the call to private property in the area of Beaver Slide Loop around 10:30 on Wednesday morning.

Lewis and Clark County Undersheriff, David Rau, confirmed to MTN that the shooting happened inside a truck when McCormick and three other people were headed to work in the area.   Rau tells MTN one of the passengers  “was manipulating the firearm” when McCormick was shot.

Rau tells MTN they are still interviewing the occupants of the truck, and the investigation is underway, but charges are possible.

“Anytime something like this happens, and life is taken, that is a part of the investigation and we are talking to the County Attorney about that,” Rau said. “There may be charges. There may not be”.

Rau says possible charges could include negligent endangerment or negligent homicide. Part of the investigation will also be to determine if anyone in the truck was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, according to Rau.

Rau says an autopsy is scheduled for McCormick next week.
