(HELENA) Scott Allen Sperle of Helena, 44 years old, is facing felony charges of sexually abusing children after investigators discovered pictures of naked females – some of whom appear to be under the age of 18 – on several electronic devices in his home.
Last month, the mother of a 14-year-old girl told police that Sperle had filmed the girl while she used the bathroom in his home.
According to court documents, the girl was staying with Sperle and his wife while her mother was out of town.
The girl told police that she after she used the toilet and was washing her hands, she noticed a cellphone in the trash can and saw that it was recording. She watched the video, which showed Sperle putting the phone into the trash can and then trying to conceal it with toilet paper. The phone was positioned to take a video of someone on the toilet, she told police.
Court documents say the girl then called for Sperle’s wife. Sperle then rushed into the bathroom and asked the girl if she had seen his phone, and because she was shocked and startled, she handed it to him.
Sperle then ran out of the bathroom and deleted the video, according to court documents.
When authorities searched his home, they found five computers, an iPad, several tablets, 25 jump (thumb) drives, three cellphones, and several memory cards.
Detectives said that they found photographs and video of females, some of whom appeared to be under the age of 18.
One of Sperle’s family members identified herself as the person pictured in several images of a teenage girl using the bathroom in 2008. The girl said she would have been about 14 or 15 years old at the time.
Sperle is charged with felony sexual abuse of children, misdemeanor surreptitious of visual observation or recordation, and felony tampering with or fabricating physical evidence.
If convicted, he could face up to 400 years in prison. Bond in the case is set at $100,000.
