(MTN NEWS-HELENA) Supporters of AAA’s Operation Tipsy Tow gathered at the Capitol building Wednesday to kick off the 11th year of the program.
Tipsy Tow offers free and confidential towing of up to 10 miles during the holiday season. The program aims to reduce drunk and impaired driving.
It can be used as many times as needed by anyone.
There are some restrictions. Callers must be within city limits, the driver will only take passengers home and people are asked to treat drivers and dispatchers respectfully.
People are also cautioned that tows can take 90 minutes or longer on high volume nights like New Year’s Eve.
Helena Police Department Lt. Jason Xander says Montana has seen 77 alcohol-related road fatalities in 2016, and that there is no reason people should get behind the wheel if they are impaired.
“A lot of times we deal with folks that are worried about leaving a vehicle behind. This is a solution to that problem. They’re getting themselves home, their vehicle home, and they’re doing it safe.” Xander says.
Tipsy Tow will be available in Helena through January 1st. If you would like to use the service contact AAA at 1 800-222-4357.
