LIBBY – Additional evacuations have been ordered near the West Fork Fire.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office has ordered residents of the following areas to leave by 12 p.m. on Thursday:

  • Kootenai River Road from Quarts Creek to end of Bighorn Terrace
  • North side of Kootenai River Road from North Central to Quartz Creek
  • Lower Bobtail, including Burrell and Indian Pipe

The earlier evacuation orders remain in place for all areas of Upper Bobtail Road, to include Hutton Drive and north near the West Fork fire remains in place as does an order for the 17 Mile community area.

The American Red Cross of Montana has opened a shelter at the Libby Assembly of God Church, 105 Collins Avenue in response to wildfire evacuations. All evacuees are welcome at the shelter, and all Red Cross services are free.

The nearly 6,400 acre West Fork Fire was detected on Aug. 30 approximately seven miles north of Libby in the Quartz Creek and Bobtail Ridge area.

Lincoln County Sheriff Roby Bowe noted that if residents refuse to leave due to the mandatory evacuation residents must stay on their property. Residents who leave their property are subject to arrest.
