(HELENA) Community members will have opportunities this week to share what they want to see in Helena’s next school superintendent.
“We have nine school board members, and rather than have those nine school board members determine the characteristics that are most important in Helena, we would like to have contributions from as many Helena people as we can,” said Terry Beaver, vice chair of the Helena School District Board of Trustees.
Current superintendent Jack Copps announced in July that he would retire at the end of the 2018 school year. The school board has hired the national firm Hazard, Young, Attea and Associates to help find candidates for the job.
Consultants from HYA will be in Helena through Wednesday, meeting with teachers, students and community groups from the Helena Education Foundation to the Chamber of Commerce. They will also conduct two one-hour forums for the public, Monday and Wednesday nights at 7 p.m. at the Ray Bjork Learning Center.
If you’re not able to make it to one of the meetings, you can fill out an online survey about what characteristics the next superintendent should have. The survey is available here.
HYA plans to present a slate of candidates to the school board on Feb. 26.
