HELENA – The first class for the newly named Prickly Pear Elementary had a chance to leave their mark on their new school Tuesday.

East Helena kindergarten and first-grade students who will attend the new school when it opens next year signed and dated their names on the building Tuesday morning.

Principal Jill Miller of Eastgate Elementary proudly signed her name with the students.

Miller will be the new principal at Prickly Pear Elementary next year. She said the event was a nice way to commemorate the new school.

“This has been a long-term project for our community and for our school district and to actually see it now visualized and going up is very exciting,” said Miller, “I’m very honored that I’ll be the principal at this new building and get to see these inaugural classes start.”

Miller added that she was excited to hear that Prickly Pear was chosen as the name and that she thinks that it is a good way to honor the history of the community.
