HELENA- The Montana Highway Patrol says the man who died in the Jefferson Co. Detention Center had been arrested following a suspected DUI crash the night before he was found dead.

Lewis and Clark Co. Coroner Bryan Backeberg identified the deceased inmate at 36-year-old Jesse Athearn of Helena.

According to the Montana Highway Patrol, a patrol trooper responded to a report of a crash just before 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 10.

MHP says the trooper asked Athearn if he was injured and Athearn reportedly said he was not.

Athearn was taken into custody on charges of DUI-2nd, driving while suspended and careless driving. Athearn was booked into the Jefferson Co. Detention Center where he was found deceased just before noon on Thursday, Jan. 11.

Backeberg said in a release on Monday that results from an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death are pending.

The Division of Criminal Investigation at the Montana Department of Justice is investigating the incident.
