HELENA- The Lewis and Clark Co. Sheriff’s Office says a Great Falls man died in an apparent climbing accident west of Augusta Sunday.

Dispatchers received the call just after 1:00 p.m.

A group of five people was ice climbing at Cataract Falls when one of them slipped and fell. Sheriff Leo Dutton said in a statement the man fell about 90 feet.

Cataract Falls is about 20 miles west of Augusta off Elk Creek Rd. The area is remote and difficult to access with deep snow and limited cell coverage.

Sheriff Dutton says first responders arrived at the victim’s location around 3:00 p.m. Officials called for Mercy Flight out Great Falls, but weather conditions meant the closest the helicopter could reach was Augusta.

A local rancher assisted with equipment to help recover the victim.
