Former Helena teacher appears in Justice Court on rape charge

HELENA- A former Helena teacher faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if she is convicted of rape for allegedly having sex with a student.

Rene Elena Carter appeared in Lewis and Clark Justice court Thursday morning.

Justice of the Peace Michael Swingly read Carter her rights and told her she is facing one count of felony Sexual Intercourse Without Consent.

The charging document alleges Carter had repeated sexual intercourse with minor male between Feb. 2015 and June 2015. Prosecutors say the male was legally incapable of giving consent.

Carter worked as a special education teacher with Helena Public Schools starting in 1998. The district says Carter resigned in July of 2015.

Justice of the Peace Swingley released her on own recognizance. She is scheduled to arraigned in district court on Feb. 21.
