HELENA- A Lewis and Clark Co. Judge has set a June trial date for a former Helena teacher charged with rape.
Rene Elena Carter was arraigned in District Court Wednesday morning.
Carter is charged with having sex with an underage male between February and June of 2015. According to the school district, Carter resigned her position in July of 2015.
During Wednesday’s arraignment, she was informed of her rights, given a not guilty plea and a trial date was scheduled for June 4.
Details of the case remain effectively sealed. Because Carter waived her rights to a probable cause preliminary hearing filing an affidavit of probable cause in the case is unnecessary.
Local media outlets have filed suit to have Helena Police release their investigative file. Judge Kathy Seeley will rule on that matter at a later date.
If convicted of rape, Carter faces two to 100 years in the State Women’s Prison.
