HELENA – Lewis and Clark County Coroner Bryan Backeberg has identified a man who died in a climbing accident west of Augusta on Sunday.
Backeberg said Monday the victim was 74-year-old Elton Adams, a doctor from Great Falls. He also confirmed Adams’ death was accidental.
The Lewis and Clark County Sheriff’s Office said five people were ice climbing at Cataract Falls when Adams slipped and fell about 90 feet.
In a statement, Sheriff Leo Dutton said first responders arrived at Adams’ location around 3 p.m. – about two hours after the initial emergency call. A medical helicopter was called in from Great Falls, but because of weather conditions, the closest it could reach was Augusta.
A local rancher provided equipment to help recover Adams.
Cataract Falls is about 20 miles west of Augusta, off Elk Creek Road. Authorities say it is a remote, difficult-to-access area, with deep snow and limited cell phone service.
The sheriff’s office said Adams was an avid climber and familiar with the area.
