Helena non-profit hosts veteran fishing trip

HELENA – A home-grown Helena non-profit helping veterans is hosting an event next weekend for a group of 15 to 20 veterans.

The group ‘Helena’s Got Your 6’ will be taking veterans on a spear fishing expedition to Tiber Reservoir on the 16, 17th and 18th of this month.

The group, formed last Veterans Day, helps veterans transitioning back to civilian life.

That help includes travel expenses for treatment, help with home heating bills or – in this case – ‘ice therapy’ for a weekend.

It’s a chance to relax, have fun, connect with fellow veterans and try a new activity for a few days.

“So I want to see that for all of these guys,” says Becky Hunsicker, Event Coordinator for the group.

“I just want to see them up there enjoying themselves and kind of just relaxing and not worry about anything,” says Hunsicker.

Kyle Nelson is founder and president of the Helena’s Got Your 6. “And once they get to sitting in those ice shelters with other veterans, they kind of open up a little bit and that’s therapy for them and that’s what they need,” says Nelson.

“Nature is always very therapeutic for anyone. And so the more that we can do that, the better off I feel that we are.”

Nelson says their group is planning for more activities for veterans for the rest of the year. Their eventual goal is to create a natural wellness center for veterans.

In the meantime, they are looking for donations of outdoor recreation equipment for this year, such as snowmobiles and boats.
