City of Helena will start collecting Christmas trees this week

HELENA — With the Holidays wrapping up, the City of Helena are reminding the public it’s Christmas Tree disposal season once again.

Residents with City garbage service can leave their tree in the alley or boulevard for pick up beginning January 2020.

People are asked to remove all ornaments and tinsel be removed from the tree before disposal, and leave the tree at least 3 feet from their trash container. Trees should not be placed in the trash container.

Public Works and Solid Waste Division staff will be working through Feb. 15 to collect the trees.

“If you see your garbage is initially picked up but the tree hasn’t been yet just hang tight, staff will get it,” said Rebecca Connors, City of Helena public information officer. “But if it hasn’t been picked up by February 15th make sure to give us a call and we’ll come out and try to figure out how to get that tree for you.”

Trees can also be self-hauled to the City Transfer Station, and no permit is required if the tree if the only item being dumped.

The Solid Waste Division is anticipating to receive thousands of trees this year, collected 32 tons of trees in 2018 alone.

A large portion of the trees will be used for perch habitat in Canyon Ferry through the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks “Pines for Perch” program.
