(HELENA) As the weather warms up this spring, many in the Helena area – especially in the North Valley – are concerned about the possibility of flooding. On Saturday morning, volunteers came together to make sure their neighbors can get sandbags.
Local church Helena First organized a sandbag-filling event. Dozens of people worked to get about 3,000 sandbags ready.
“There are people here both from the church and just from the community that came along to help today,” said lead pastor Paul Feuerstein.
The event came about after Lewis and Clark County leaders announced they would no longer be able to provide sandbags to residents. Sparrow Enterprises donated several tons of sand.
Families were able to receive up to 50 bags with no charge. The Helena Valley Flood Committee phoned seniors and other Valley residents who might not be able to pick up their own sandbags to set up deliveries.
“We’re doing it the old-fashioned way,” said committee member Jeannene Maas.
Organizers say they were grateful for everyone who helped make the event happen.
“We love it,” said Feuerstein. “We love the community, and we love people coming together to help.”
