HELENA — On Wednesday Nov. 13, first responders and community members were raising money for Helena Food Share at an event that was as sweet as pie.

This is the third year the Helena Safeway held their “Pie in the Face” fundraiser.

People could pie a volunteer with every $20 donation.

Some of this year’s targets included Sheriff Leo Dutton, Tri-Lakes Fire Chief Bob Drake and Andy Shirtliff from Anderson ZurMuehlen.

Helena Police Detective Domingo Zapata was a personal favorite target of some of the Safeway staff.

One in seven people in the greater Helena area struggles with hunger, and one in five children don’t know where their next meal is coming from.

Participants said they’re more than happy to take one on the chin to help their neighbors in need.

“There are some families that can’t afford what it takes to have a good Thanksgiving,” said Sheriff Dutton. “So if you have any giving in your heart, please come down and donate.”

Safeway and both Albertsons locations in Helena will be collecting donations through Thanksgiving with their “turkey bucks.”

All money raised goes directly to Helena Food Share.

The grocery stores have already raised around $11,000 for the food bank this year.
