HELENA — With winter weather on the horizon, homeowners are advised to take steps to prevent damage to their sprinkler systems.

Winter weather has the potential of freezing exterior pipes which can cause cracks or ruptures.

“The primary concern of your sprinkler system is where your water source comes from your home and goes to the ground,” said Joe Spieker, owner of Spieker Sprinklers. “The backflow preventer needs to be covered with a coat, a blanket or sleeping bag. If you will do that your system will be just fine.”

Spieker Sprinklers probed the ground on September 26 and report the ground temperature being around 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

“Anything in the ground should be fine, a blanket of snow works as an insulator,” said Spieker.

Spieker added that couple minutes of work can save the homeowner a lot of headache and money.
