The Center for Asbestos Related Disease (CARD) in Libby is finally getting its dangerous parking lot fixed thanks to a grant from Flathead Electric Cooperative's Round Up for Safety program.
CARD Administrative Director Tracy McNew says their parking lot is too small and sloped at a dangerous angle.
McNew notes that CARD treats 7,000 patients who suffer from asbestos related illnesses and with room for a maximum of eight cars McNew says accidents would frequently occur in the parking lot.
No handicapped parking was available which McNew says is a huge problem since many of the CARD center's patients are very sick.
"We've had a few traffic accidents in there because they're backing into each other and off of the street. Also, the slope has been a real problem. We had somebody fall and break their knee two winters ago which was really scary."
All these problems should be fixed by the end of October after the Flathead Electric Cooperative's Round Up fo Safety provided a $10,000 grant to the CARD center to fix these issues.
The money for the new parking lot comes from a separate money source and not from Flathead Electric Cooperative member's bills.
The new parking lot will be completely flat and have plenty of parking for patients and staff.
