HELENA — Helena High School culinary students met with Central Elementary students Tuesday to showcase Montana grown food.

The educational opportunity is made possible through the Harvest of the Month program through the MSU extension office.

The teens meet with the kids every month. The primary goals for the program are to expose the children to new, healthy foods and to support Montana’s farmers and ranchers.

The teenage teachers taught the young tigers about Montana grown grains, like wheat and barley, by making pancakes.

The highschoolers also spoke on the nutritional benefits of using whole grains, such being packed full of fiber and even helping reduce the risk of heart disease.

Helena High Junior Anja Severtson said she’s had a blast with the program, and learned just as much as the elementary kids.

“I just love how we connect to the kids and they really seem to retain and understand the information that we give them,” said Severtson. “They always just have so much fun doing it every month, we just love seeing them.”
