Another hot afternoon for north-central Montana

Fire danger heating up this afternoon

Weekend temperatures climbed into the 90s, and today is going to be another hot one. Thanks to continued high pressure over us, hot, dry weather will elevate the fire danger this afternoon. But because of the high pressure system, winds will stay fairly calm, which will be good for containing current wildfires.

Later this week, Montana will get some relief from the extreme heat, as temperatures drop into the 80s. However, thunderstorm chances will increase again. Atmospheric instability will bring afternoon showers and thunderstorms to north-central Montana. The weekend will also usher in more active weather, as a strong low-pressure system off the Pacific Coast moves inland, breaking down the persistent high over the western United States.
