HELENA – Construction began Monday on the extensive reconstruction of Helena’s West Main Street.

Helena Sand and Gravel started work near the intersection of Grizzly Gulch and Oro Fino Gulch.

They will remove the existing pavement, sidewalks and curbs, then install a new roadway, utility lines and storm drains.

The project area extends to Reeder’s Village.

Once the project is fully underway, West Main will be down to one lane.

Drivers could see delays of up to 20 minutes.

Pedestrians and bicyclists will have to ride in a pilot car during working hours.

Construction managers hope to have most of the work completed by September.

HELENA – Crews will start work next week on a major road project that will affect traffic south of downtown Helena throughout the summer.

On Monday, Helena Sand and Gravel will start removing the existing pavement, sidewalks and curbs on West Main Street. It’s the first step in an extensive reconstruction of the street, from Reeder’s Village to the intersection of Grizzly Gulch and Oro Fino Gulch.

The long-awaited project could cost a total of more than $3 million. Workers will replace the asphalt roadway, sidewalks, curbs and gutters, and they will install new water and sewer lines and storm drains.

West Main will be down to one lane once the project starts. Leaders say there could be delays of up to 20 minutes. Pedestrians and bicyclists will have to ride in a pilot car during working hours.

Construction managers hope to have most of the work completed by September.

Helena Sand and Gravel will provide regular updates on the project on their website and on the project’s Facebook page.
