Tips to stay safe and alert during hail season

Severe weather season is right around the corner here in southwest Montana.

The region often sees strong thunderstorms that can produce large hail and straight-line winds in late May through July.

Some of these storms can cause injuries and expensive damage to agriculture, vehicles and roofing. Gallatin County Emergency Management Director Patrick Lonergan said it’s important for your own safety to be aware when a storm approaches.

“You want to pay attention to weather alerts and warnings when they come out in watches. It’s also a challenge to pinpoint who will and won’t be affected by them. It’s probably in your best interest to assume you can be affected by them and try and limit your exposure to that,” Lonergan said.
