BOZEMAN – As the weather starts to get cooler, people tend to want to warm their cars up before taking off.

Whether you’re at your residences or out and about, the Bozeman Police Department says it’s not a great idea to leave your keys in the ignition and your car unlocked.

“If you’re going to choose to warm your car up in the winter time so you can clear the snow off your windows and things of that nature, you definitely don’t want to leave it running and unlocked,” said Bozeman Police Department Operations Sergeant Travis Munter.

“What happens a lot of times — you see it happen downtown at night time — you want to warm your car up, they go back into whatever restaurant they were in and they come back out and their car is gone,” Munter said.

If you do need to warm up your car, make sure you have the fob device on you so you can lock your car with the keys in the ignition.
