MISSOULA – A longtime college dean at the University of Montana is returning to his roots.

Stephen Kalm, dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts since 2009, plans to rejoin the University of Montana teaching faculty full time at the end of this year.

“I’m really excited to have a studio again and also to perform more,” Kalm said in a news release. “I’m also one of the longest-serving deans on campus, so I felt now was my time.”

UM Dean: Feared cuts to arts programs were “unfounded”

Provost Jon Harbor said an interim dean will be appointed before Kalm steps down.

Kalm, who holds a 2000 Doctorate in Musical Arts from the City University of New York, joined the UM faculty in 1994 to lead the opera program. He also served as chair of the Department of Music from 2002 to 2008, when he was named interim dean. He became the permanent dean in 2009 after a national search.

“It has been rewarding to serve as dean of the CVPA during the past 10 and a half years, and I look upon this time as one of the most fulfilling experiences in my life,” Kalm said.

“I leave this position at a time of growing enrollments throughout the college; outstanding research, performances and exhibitions by our faculty and students; and tremendous support for the arts throughout UM and the Missoula community.,” Kalm added.
