Lewis and Clark County encourages residents to register for Emergency Alerts

HELENA – Lewis and Clark County public safety officials are reminding residents of a simple way to make sure they get the most up-to-date information in their area in the event of an emergency.

The Smart911 system allows users to localize what emergency alerts they receive.

Right now, just under 4,000 county residents have signed up for the service out of the population of 68,000. That’s just under 6%.

Lewis and Clark County Community Outreach Coordinator Jeni Garcin says the time to get signed up is before it’s needed.

“We’re always hearing about these things happening to other people, we never know when it’s going to be at our back door,” says Garcin. “If there’s fire coming over the ridge or the floodwater is at your front door it’s too late. This is to protect you and your family and make sure you are recieving the right information at the right time, so you can make smart decisions to protect you and your family.”

Residents can input additional information if they would like, but need only submit their name, phone number, email and address to get area specific alerts.

The Broadwater County Sheriff’s Office also recently reminded residents of their alert notification signup system.
