BUTTE – Butte citizens have a chance to help themselves get fit while helping their local firefighters.

The Montana Golden Gloves and Pink Gloves group in Butte is hosting a stair climb event, with part of the proceeds helping to pay for the Butte Fire Department’s travel expenses to Seattle in March, to compete in a firefighter stair climb competition.

To register for the for the 8-week challenge, visit the Pink Gloves Boxing Utah Ave. location on Tuesday. The stair climb competition will be held each Tuesday at 7 p.m., from Jan. 8 through Feb. 26.

“You know what, we have to recognize the sacrifice of firefighters do for us — and in equipment, you know? What a challenge they have to put themselves through to be ready in case you needed them in an emergency,” said event organizer Leigh-Ann Whitworth.

The fundraising stair climb is open to men and women.

The Seattle competition is on March 10, and three firefighters from Butte will participate in that event.
