LAME DEER- Rynalea Whiteman Pena will be the new Northern Cheyenne tribal president.

She defeated Geri Small 569 to 455 votes in the election held Thursday.

“I’d like to thank the people of the Northern Cheyenne nation for having faith in me,” Whiteman Pena said. “I will do the best of my ability to serve and represent the Northern Cheyenne Tribe.”

Pena will take the place of L. Jace Killsback, who resigned in the middle of his term last year.

For the vice president, Winfield Russell defeated Terry Beartusk, 546 to 499.

Russell and Pena will both be sworn in Jan. 21.
