HELENA – Judge Menahan’s court room in Helena was busy Thursday night, but this time no one is facing jail time. No one real at least.

That’s because Helena’s mock trial team was running their last practice before competition in Idaho, arguing the fictional murder case of Timothy Eagon.

The club, which the only one in the state, is very similar to speech and debate.

The students receive their case in November, and practice all aspect of a courtroom trial in preparation for actual competition.

It’s a lot of hard work, but a really cool and unique opportunity for these potential future lawyers.

“It’s something I’ve been doing my entire high school career that I really enjoy,” said Helena High senior Aurora Boutin. “For some students, it helps them with their public speaking skills. It really is just fun, like our coaches are great. And I personally think all the people in it are great, so it’s just like a huge group of friends that go and kick-butt at court together.”

Because this is the only team in the state they have to compete against teams in Idaho, which means some travel costs.
