HELENA – Tick season is officially underway in Montana.
According to Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, tick season in Montana begins with the onset of warmer weather and lasts until about mid-July when low humidity and higher temperatures cause the ticks to become inactive.
They are known to crawl on low vegetation, according to FWP and attach to people and animals that brush up against them.
There are several diseases carried by Montana ticks, including Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.
Wildlife officials say there are steps you can take ahead of recreating outdoors.
Montana FWP’s website outlines precautions that include wearing light colored clothing so you can better see ticks that may be on you, tucking your pant legs into your socks so they cannot crawl under your clothing and applying repellant.
And carefully check children and pets for any ticks, as well.
