HELENA — Construction is set to begin later this month on a new pedestrian and bicycle path in Helena.

The Montana Department of Transportation announced that contractor JAG Grading and Paving will start work Monday, Aug. 17.

The paved path will run about a half-mile along the east side of Benton Avenue, adjacent to Bill Roberts Golf Course and Batch Fields. The project will also include improvements like crosswalks and fencing.

Helena city leaders said there is already heavy pedestrian and bike use on Benton, with an unofficial trail visible along the road. They said installing a path will create safer access for walkers and riders.

This work is expected to take about 10 weeks. MDT said there will be some lane closures and construction-related traffic in the area.

MDT said the project is being paid for through Federal Highway Administration funds and a match from the City of Helena.
