Montana COVID-19 death toll rises by 1, no new cases reported Wednesday

The death toll in Montana from COVID-19 increased to 16 on Wednesday, but the state added no new cases, according to the Montana Response COVID-19 tracking map.

The death was reported in Yellowstone County, the second COVID-19 related death reported in the county.

Here's a statement released Wednesday morning from RiverStone Health:

With tremendous sorrow, RiverStone Health, the public health agency in Yellowstone County, has reported the second death of an individual in Yellowstone County from complications due to COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. This death marks the 16th from COVID-19 in Montana.

The death occurred on Tuesday, April 28. The man, in his 70s, died in a Yellowstone County hospital. To protect the privacy of the individual and family members, RiverStone Health will not release further information about the death.

“COVID-19 has taken its second life in the community and the virus has prevented many from being with those they love in their last days and at their most vulnerable moments,” said John Felton, Yellowstone County Health Officer and President and CEO of RiverStone Health. “The death of this resident is a reminder of the extremely serious nature of this pandemic. Our prayers are with the family and loved ones at this difficult time”.

The state total number of COVID-19 cases remain at 451. On Tuesday the state reported two new cases , including one each in Yellowstone and Cascade counties.

The number of active cases in Yellowstone County dropped from 20 on Tuesday to 14 on Wednesday. Yellowstone County has the highest number of active cases in the state.

The total number of tests statewide increased by 337 to 13,528.

Five people remain hospitalized, and there have been a total of 61 hospitalizations.
