The Great Falls Police Department is reminding people to take steps to prevent their vehicles from becoming targets for thieves.

Recently, there has been a spike in break-ins, and the GFPD has been posting to Facebook several easy tips to help reduce the chances of having your property stolen or damaged.

The posts are something the department has done before, but it will now be made more frequently. The posts encourage people to implement a nightly routine that includes the following steps:

  • remove valuable from vehicles
  • lock vehicle doors
  • close overhead garage door
  • lock the inner garage door
  • lock all residence doors
  • close all windows
  • turn on an exterior light

"We've received positive feedback and comments to that effect from some of our viewers,” explained Sgt. Eric Baumann. "If property isn't getting broken into and people have protected their valuables, then we consider it a success."

As for some of the recent break-ins, Baumann said the department does have a suspect and was in the process of identifying that person on Wednesday.
