HELENA – A 38 year-old Helena man is accused of raping an underage girl.

Craig Hotvedt appeared in Lewis and Clark Justice Court on Tuesday, charged with seven felonies.

If convicted, Hotvedt could face more than 300 years in the Montana State Prison.

According to charging documents, investigators were called to the hospital on February 20 after a girl under the age of 16 had been admitted by her mother.

Investigators say the girl appeared to be under the influence and told her mother she had been with a man between the ages of 20 and 30.

Court records say an examination of the girl’s phone showed she had been in frequent communication with Hotvedt and some of it was sexual in nature.

Documents say when interviewed, Hotvedt told police he and his roommate had picked the girl up February 20th, and that he hid the girl when a member of her
family had come looking for her. He also reportedly admitted that he and the girl smoked marijuana that he provided.

The judge set bond at $40,000
