HELENA — As of Wednesday morning, the Lump Gulch Fire was 35% contained, and all pre-evacuation notices in the area of the fire had been lifted.

According to the Incident Management Site For Fire, the fire was started by power lines around 3:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

Strong winds at the time caused the fire to quickly grow to more than 1,000 acres.

It is estimated to be 1,073 acres.

Fire crews and heavy equipment will continue to build and reinforce containment and access lines on the east and west sides of the fire as well as begin work clearing evacuation routes should they be needed for future operations.

Crews will mop up and manage any hot spots inside the fire perimeter and work to achieve 100% containment near structures. There is a permanent area closure on USFS land near the active timber sale.

Leaders are continuing to ask the public to stay away from the area if possible, so fire crews can get around safely.
