HELENA — The Helena City Commission will hold a discussion Thursday night on the future of the Helena Police Department's School Resource Officer program. It will be the first meeting in a planned review of HPD's operations, announced in the wake of nationwide calls for police reform.

The meeting will be held online, through the Zoom platform. It is scheduled to run from 4 to 7 p.m.

The public can join the meeting using a link or by calling in. You can find information on how to participate here.

The SRO program places four uniformed HPD officers in Helena Public Schools campuses.

Some members of the public have called for ending the program, saying having officers in schools isn't the best way to keep students safe. Those who support keeping SROs say they don't want safety resources taken out of schools.
