HELENA — A longtime Helena-area fire chief has stepped down from his position.

Jordan Alexander retired from the Baxendale Volunteer Fire Department last month. He had spent around 30 years – the first few in the Bozeman area, and the rest with Baxendale. He said he served about eight years as chief.

During his time with the department, Alexander oversaw a number of improvements – including the long-awaited construction of a new fire station near Rimini. The department had been working for about 20 years to get a station in the area, before it finally opened in March 2019.

Clint Loss, formerly Baxendale’s assistant fire chief, is taking over as the new chief. Alexander expressed strong confidence in Loss.

“I’m leaving the department in good hands,” he said. “They’re going to come out just fine.”

Alexander is one of several long-tenured fire chiefs who have stepped down recently in the Helena area, including Rick Abraham of the Montana City Volunteer Fire Department and Bob Drake of the Tri-Lakes Volunteer Fire Department.
