HELENA — The Helena Police Department (HPD) are encouraging everyone to be prepared and know what to do in an active shooter situation.

On Tuesday September 17, HPD will be hosting Active Shooter Training at the Helena Civic Center from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

The presentation is free and open to the public.

The preparedness event will focus on the run, lock and fight model and will help people develop a plan should they be involved in a crisis situation.

HPD Corporal Noal Petty said this isn’t an easy conversation, but it is unfortunately needed.

“You talk to your family about what to do in the event of a fire, what to do in the event of an earthquake or natural disaster, you name it. This is just something else you need to be prepared for,” said Petty. “It’s a scary topic, nobody wants to talk about it. But we need to have the conversation about it because it can happen, and it can happen anywhere.”

In the event of an active shooter people should first run. Have an escape route and plan in mind.

Hide in an area out of the shooter’s view, block the entry to the hiding place and lock the doors.

Fight back as a last resort and only when your life is in danger.

Call 911 as soon as possible, but only after finding in a safe location.
