HELENA — The United Way of the Lewis and Clark Area is asking the public to help provide holiday gifts for local veterans and their families.

The organization is holding a holiday drive, in partnership with Montana Joining Community Forces. They are looking for gifts and items that will be given out to about 200 veterans and family members who are expected to attend JCF’s annual Christmas dinner on Dec. 19.

“We thought this was a great opportunity,” said United Way executive director Emily McVey.

The organization has put out a list of items they are collecting, including:

· Winter gloves
· Fishing poles and supplies
· Traction cleats
· Cleaning supplies
· T-shirts, sweatshirts and flannel shirts, sizes M to XL
· New coats, sizes L to XL
· Puzzles for all ages
· Gift cards for gas or food
· Books for all ages
· Legos
· Coffee
· Long underwear
· Tool sets

The United Way has also set up a Christmas tree at its offices in Helena, with tags showing specific wishes for some family members, including children.

This is the first year United Way has held this drive.

“Especially during the holiday season, this is just a really fun opportunity for those of us here at the United Way to connect back and help a group of people that aren’t necessarily in the limelight asking for help, but need the help nonetheless,” said McVey.

The drive will continue through Dec. 10. McVey said they want to collect the items early, so JCF and volunteers can wrap them before the dinner.

You can drop off items at the United Way offices, at 75 East Lyndale Ave. For more information, you can contact the organization at (406) 442-4360.
