BILLINGS - This Friday night at 6 p.m., Relay for Life of Yellowstone County will be holding their annual event to raise awareness in the fight against cancer.
Though this year things will be a little different.
Instead of the normal walk-a-ton, most of the event will be behind the wheel to maintain social distancing. Participants are asked to take their laps this year by driving down 24th Street West, which will be lit by luminaria bags.
The event means so much to so many, including David Killens, a blood cancer survivor.
Killens was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in the summer of 2017 and he did much of his treatment at St. Vincent Healthcare’s Cancer Centers of Montana in Billings. Killens said he received amazing treatment and care at CCM and coupled with the help from Relay for Life, it made all the difference.
“I don’t know if the people who donate and support this realize what it does for people like me,” he said. “With the gas cards, help with motel rooms, stuff like that, it would be hard to do without that.”
Between his treatments and the aid he received through Relay for Life, he beat his cancer.
“I’ve got to do a lot since I got better,” he said. “I got to walk my daughter down the aisle.”
What Relay for Life dose for people like Killens every day is, in his words, “amazing.”
Not only will Killens be taking part in the event on Friday, but many people are expected to show up and show support.
