Whitefish Schools superintendent announces retirement

The Whitefish School District will soon begin the hunt for a new superintendent following Heather Davis Schmidt's resignation.

Davis Schmidt has submitted her resignation to the Board of Trustees effective at the end of this current school year.

“I did this early because it is critical to the success of Whitefish Schools and our students that we ensure a smooth transition, including the time and opportunity for the Trustees to hire the next Superintendent of Whitefish Schools,” said Davis Schmidt. “I will help make the transition to the next Superintendent a smooth and positive process for all.”

She told the Whitefish community in November 2018 that due to changes in her family situation, such as her husband's significant travel for work, this would be her final contract.

“My husband now spends significant time traveling, making it much more difficult for our children and us,” she said. “These changes are encouraging and wonderful, but create the necessity for this announcement, which I approach in a positive light.”

Davis Schmidt says she will continue to fulfill her responsibilities through the end of her fifth year in Whitefish.

She added in a news release that she is humbled by the community's support, the quality of educators, and the opportunity she's been given to serve.

“I care deeply about all of our students, teachers, support staff, administrators, families, and the community of Whitefish,” she said. “I fulfill my leadership role and job duties daily with great pride, integrity, and a belief in all children.”

The Board of Trustees has already established a search committee to plan and organize the process of hiring a new superintendent.
