HELENA — Leaders with the Montana Department of Transportation say drivers will begin using a new roundabout in the Helena Valley this week.

Crews have been working to install a roundabout at the intersection of York Road and Lake Helena Drive has been going on since May. Drivers have been detoured around the work area.

On Tuesday, the first section of the roundabout will be opened to traffic. However, the southbound section will remain closed while crews finish pouring concrete and repaving.

Officials say paving work has been finished on York Road and on the northbound section of Lake Helena Drive, but they still need to place asphalt on the southbound side. Lake Helena Drive will be closed between York Road and Canyon Ferry Road while the work goes on, and drivers going south will be redirected onto Valley Drive.

Once the concrete and asphalt work is finished, the full roundabout will be opened for use.

Leaders remind drivers that the speed limit through the construction area has been reduced to 25 mph.

MDT says the new roundabout will reduce the risk of crashes at the intersection. You can find more information about the project on the agency’s website.
