HELENA -- The Helena - Lewis and Clark National Forest Service will not require Morel hunters to get a permit for the 2020 season which starts on May 15.

Though anyone can scour the riverbanks or deep corners of the forest for the fungi under the free use program, the Forest Service has rules for hunters looking to get their fill of up to 5 gallons of the mushrooms.

The rules include cutting mushrooms at ground height to preserve the fungus, as well as using any fungus collected on national forest land before leaving the area.
