Bert the Bison turns 3

We want to wish Bert the Bison at ZooMontana a very happy Birthday- or should we say, 'Bert-Day.'

Bert turned three years old Thursday, which makes him almost fully matured. Think of him as an 18-year-old about to go to college.

Thursday morning, zookeepers put out not only a card for him, but several treats and new toys, which he seems to be loving.

He has been very active lately. If you go to see him, know that he is in rut, so he might be showing off for Nelly the other Bison.

Fun Facts about Bert:

  • He is estimated to be close to 1,000 pounds.
  • When fully grown, he can reach 2,000 pounds and run 35 mph.
  • He came to the zoo from a local veterinarian who raised him after he was trampled by a herd, badly breaking his leg.
  • The average lifespan for a bison is 10 to 20 years, but some live to be older.
