Applestem Corn Maize and Pumpkin Patch will be closed for the 2019 season.

The corn maize and sheep farm recently moved to Craig from Vaughn and the growing season was difficult.

In a social media post, staff wrote last winter was not conducive for planting corn. The corn was planted late, and what did grow was eaten by birds.

The owners planted triticale and sorghum to replace the corn as both grow fast, but the plants will not be waist high by September 21, the corn maize's projected opening day.

Applestem has postponed its grand opening in Craig until next year.

"While we are disappointed that we cannot share our home with you this year, postponing the 15th season allows us to concentrate on moving and establishing permanent structures. By doing this we can guarantee, the fun-filled experience that we strive to achieve. Being in Craig, allows us to do more that just the corn maize and that is what we plan to do."

Staff is planning to host festivals next year before opening for the 2020 season.

The Corn Maize had been hosted near Vaughn for many years; they explained their recent move to the Craig area:

We used to be Sterling Cattle Corn Maize. We used to be outside of Vaughn. Now we are Applestem Corn Maize and Pumpkin Patch and we are located outside of Craig. Craig is the halfway point between Helena and Great Falls along the Missouri River. Craig has always been our main operation and where the sheep live. Vaughn was where the cows and corn maize lived, but it was never home. We lived in Craig and worked in Vaughn. Some people may understand the feeling, the feeling that is time to come home. We believe it is time to go home. It may be a farther drive for some but we hope that you agree the beautiful drive through the canyon is worth it.
