Huttinger Ranch and Horse Rescue started less than a year ago after owner Bobbi Jo Dunwald rescued Elvis from a meat truck for just $150.
Dunwald says that experience opened her eyes to how common horse neglect and abuse can be, with many horses eventually shipped to slaughter. She says improper care can also lead to serious medical issues.
“My goal is to intervene in that process as much as possible and bring as many home that I can,” Dunwald said.
The rescue currently cares for five horses and has already re-homed one. Volunteers help care for the animals three times a week alongside a farrier and veterinarian.
Dunwald says the cost of care can get expensive, as she works other jobs to afford supplies and care.
Growing up around horses, she says the connection she feels with them is calming in a way that’s hard to describe.
“They're very therapeutic, so just a simple nose pet like this can be so rewarding and decompressing,” she said.
The rescue is hoping to expand and support more horses, and appreciates any donations or volunteers to help in their care.
