HELENA — Helena Area Friends of Pets is continuing its mission to reduce pet overpopulation and help pet owners afford essential veterinary care through community fundraising efforts.
The nonprofit held its annual fall garage sale fundraiser this past weekend, with residents donating items to raise money for the organization's programs. The all-volunteer group has served the Helena area for about 20 years and has helped more than 9,000 animals receive spay and neuter services during that time.

According to the organization, cat overpopulation remains a growing concern in the Helena area. Expanded spay and neuter clinics are now helping sterilize up to 30 cats each week in an effort to reduce the number of unwanted litters and homeless animals.
Helena Area Friends of Pets partners with the Humane Society and other local organizations to provide reduced-cost spay and neuter services, vaccinations and wellness checks. The assistance is available to qualifying low-income pet owners and veterans.
Mary Gegenhuber, president of Helena Area Friends of Pets, said spaying and neutering pets is critical for both animal health and keeping pets with their families.

"To keep a pet and keep 'em healthy, you need to spay and neuter them," Gegenhuber said. "It's the best thing in the world for them. That's the only option. They're gonna lose their animal if they can't get it spayed or neutered, and these are family members."
The organization says donations and fundraising events remain its primary source of support. More information about donating or qualifying for assistance is available through Helena Area Friends of Pets.
