HELENA — Earlier this week, concerns and confusion between the City of Helena and Helena Public Schools about this temporary parking lot by Helena High drew attention on Facebook. Now the city, the district, and the Helena Area Chamber of Commerce have found a way to move forward, releasing a joint statement.
(Watch the video below)
First, the temporary parking lot for Helena High School is on state-owned land adjacent to Helena College, according to the school district, and was built to accommodate student vehicles and prevent overflow parking into nearby residential neighborhoods while the main campus parking lot is disrupted by major new construction.
The city and school district have different responsibilities for these major construction projects, but both say they share the same goal: ensuring the new and improved facilities are completed safely and on time.
The city says they have a responsibility to review the projects and make sure the facilities meet safety standards and legal requirements.
The school district says that the focus is on delivering safe, high-quality learning spaces for students, with a target completion date of August 2028.
With several projects moving forward at the same time, both sides say staying in communication will be especially important. That includes coordinating timelines, sharing project updates, and addressing potential problems before they create delays.
School and city leaders say the stronger partnership is meant to make construction more efficient and help keep everyone working toward the same deadline.
The full statement can be found below:
Public schools and municipal government are two foundational pillars of our community, and the strength of their partnership directly impacts the quality of life for Helena residents. The City of Helena and Helena Public Schools take our shared responsibilities to public safety, fiscal stewardship, and the well-being of our children seriously. As we undertake one of the most significant public construction and infrastructure efforts in Helena's recent history, we are committed to working together, alongside the Helena Area Chamber of Commerce, to identify solutions, strengthen communication, and keep these important projects moving forward.
We recognize that the City has a responsibility to ensure facilities meet public safety standards and legal requirements, while the School District must deliver safe, high-quality educational facilities for Helena's students by August 2028. These responsibilities are complementary, and both are essential to serving our community. Moving forward, we will maintain regular coordination between leadership and project teams, align timelines and communication processes, and provide timely public updates on project progress.
Together, we remain committed to collaboration, problem-solving, and successfully delivering these projects for the benefit of Helena residents for generations to come.
